Early , Late or Anytime ?

Once you’ve boarded, unpacked, and taken a moment to settle in, it’s time to explore. One of the first things I always suggest? Check out the dining options on board.

Be warned—you’re going to be spoilt for choice. Many of Royal Caribbean’s new Icon Class ships offer over 20 dining venues. From everyone’s favourite pizza to all-you-can-eat Mediterranean-style bakes and breads, plus daily specials inspired by that day’s port of call, you’ll often find yourself saying, “I shouldn’t have eaten so much.” It’s fine though—remember, cruise calories don’t count on land!

With so many options, it can be hard to decide what, when, and where to eat (the struggles of cruising… right?). My advice: head straight to the cruise line’s app or the daily newsletter.

Here, you’ll find restaurant opening times and—at most venues—the menu for the day.

Dining Options on Most Cruise Lines

Typically, you’ll be given three main choices:

  1. Early Seating

  2. Anytime Dining

  3. Late Seating

It’s completely up to you which suits your routine, but keep in mind: early seating is almost always the busiest. Families tend to dine early to get little ones fed and off to bed, and many guests choose this time so they can catch the first theatre show or outdoor movie. Plus, early seating usually sits between 5–6 PM, ideal for travellers wanting an early night before a big day in port.

Late seating, usually around 8 PM, offers the same menu but a calmer atmosphere. Most guests have drifted off to bed or evening activities, so it often feels more relaxed.

If neither early nor late works for you, many cruise lines offer Anytime Dining—perfect for travellers who don’t want to commit to a fixed time. You simply walk in when you’re ready. Just be aware that without a reservation, there might be a short wait. Personally, I’ve never waited more than 15 minutes.

A Few Extra Dining Tips

When choosing your dining option, always let the host know if you prefer a shared or non-shared table. Cruising is a fantastic way to meet new people—but I’ll admit, I like my quiet morning coffee with just my partner (I’m not a morning person).

Cruise lines have embraced the app revolution, and it’s a big win for guests. You now have information that wasn’t always easily accessible—menus, wait times, reservations, and more—right at your fingertips.

Once you’ve selected a dining time, simply head to the restaurant at the designated slot. This applies whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, with a group, or with the whole family.

For Anytime Dining guests: you’ll usually need to check in on the app, head to the restaurant, and ensure your entire party is present before being seated.

Dining times may vary across cruise lines, so always check the app to stay updated on opening hours, menus, and any new offerings.

Enjoy the food, eat a little too much, and remember—there’s always room for dessert!
